Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 6th Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry on September 19, 1861 (Pennsylvania Adjutant General records lists his name as "Benjamin Stiner"). He then served until through the end of the war, briefly serving with the 2nd Pennsylvania Provisional Cavalry before being honorably mustered out on June 17, 1865.
