Ephriam was the son of Andrew J Burchard and Nancy Lockard. He served in the Civil War. Ephriam was a resident of Glenwood when he enlisted at Council Bluffs, Iowa, as a Private on August 12, 1862 at the age of 18. He mustered in Co B 29th Iowa Infantry on Nov 15, 1862 and mustered out on Aug 10, 1865. He saw action in Missouri, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Alabama.
Ephriam married Mary Frances Stearns at Glenwood on Apr 15, 1866. They had five children: Theodore H, Nellie, Clara H, Foster F, and Nancy E.
He died in 1896 from cancer at the age of 54 years 6 months 8 days.
NOTE: Regarding year of birth: Civil War records list year of birth as 1842 and age 18 at his enlistment. Had he been born in 1842 age at enlistment would be 20. Death certificate states he died age 54Y 6M 8D which would mean year of birth 1841. Last name also found spelled Burchard.
