Oliver was the ninth of ten children, and born in Sidney Township, Hastings, Ontario, Canada, to Weighty (Curtis) and George Rosebush. It is believed that the family came down to New York State, first to Conesus, Livingston Co., to avoid the unpleasantries of the MacKenzie Rebellion which pitted the "east" of Canada (Quebec and eastern Ontario: the British) against the "west" (Upper Canada or westerly Ontario: the settlers).
