Annie Short Yeates was born in Alabama in 1877 to Jesse Augustus and Ruth Virginia Critz. According to the 1880 Mobile, Mobile County, Alabama census she had the following siblings...Creola 1858, Lizzie 1862, Lorena 1863, Gregory 1865, Richard 1873, Ruth 1875 a year after the census Jessie France was born in 1881. The older of these children could not be children of Ruth as she would have been too young to bear children when they were born. Ruth and Jesse married in 1875 so any born before that date would have been for another marriage of Jesse.
On November 30, 1899 Annie married Charles Edgar Ard in Oktibbeha, Mississippi. In 1900 they are in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, her mother Ruth, now a widow is living with her daughter and her new husband of less than a year. Ruth says she is the mother of 5 with 3 living but there are 7 children listed in the 1880 census so were the oldest in 1880 from Jesse's first marriage? In 1910 Annie and her husband Charles are now living in Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi and are the parents of their three children, Ruth Chandler 1900, Charles Edgar, Jr 1902, and Jessie S 1909. In 1910 Charles and Annie are still in Starkville Mississippi where Charles is an architect and he and Annie still have only 3 children. Her mother had passed away on April 3rd, just a few short days before the April 22nd census date. By 1920 Charles has moved Annie and their children to Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama where he worked in a foundry, probably as an architect. Anniston at the time had 3 foundries in operation, there was good money in the business. Annie has three servants living with the family all with the last name of Weeks. On January 15, 1922 Annie again suffered loss as her beloved Charles passed away. She had his body taken back to Mississippi to be laid to rest. She remained living in Alabama with her children where Charles Edgar Jr and his wife Frances and their daughter Elizabeth Ann who is 1 8/12 months old can be found living with Annie in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. By 1940 Charles Jr and his family have moved out of his mom's home but only next door as Annie is listed as head of household and living alone in Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. On May 9, 1956 the Birmingham Newspaper announced the death of Mrs. Annie Short Ard on page 12. Her remains were taken back to Mississippi to buried next to her beloved Charles Edgar Ard Sr.
