Joseph Richard Hawthorne was the step grandfather to Brigadier General John Herbert Kelly, known as the "Boy General of the Confederacy." General Kelly and his brother, Rollin Herbert, grew up at Hawthorne House, the lovely Antebellum plantation in Pine Apple, Alabama. J.R. Hawthorn built the home for his 3rd.wife, Harriet Herbert Hawthorn, in 1852. The beautiful home is still standing today. He served in the 44th Alabama Infantry during the Civil War.
