Accomplished trumpet player, row captain of the Rome [Georgia] High School marching band, Buzz was also active in the RHS Hi-Y service organization, a division of the YMCA. It was in the latter role that brought Buzz to Atlanta Georgia to the Hi-Y Second Youth Assembly, and he was elected "Clerk of the House" of the assembly the night before the meeting. He and three other Rome High School boys: Charles Keith, Lamar Brown, and Billy Walden were killed in the horrific Hotel Winecoff fire. The fire killed 119 in all and inspired legislation for future fire codes. Unfortunately for the RHS boys, their hotel room was situated on the backside of the tenth floor, where no fire ladder could reach.
Buzz Slatton's ultimate ambition was to be the governor of Georgia.
