Virginia Rebecca Sills was born on the 2nd day of June 1821; the daughter of David and Elizabeth (née Whilite) Sills from Halifax County, North Carolina.

At the age of sixteen on the 26th of Feb 1844, Virginia married John Hinton Alston, son of James & Temperance (née Thomas) Alston of Halifax, North Carolina. Virginia and John emigrated out to Oktibbeha County Mississippi around 1840. There they had the following known children:
