Killed in the Winecoff Hotel Fire while on a school trip to Atlanta. Lamar was a Senior at Rome High School and a delegate to the Hi-Y Second Youth Assembly, a service organziation and branch of the YMCA for young men and women. Lamar was the city badminton champion and also an avid stamp collector. He was killed with classmates Charles Keith, Billy Walden and Buzz Slatton. Lamar had called his parents shortly before the fire broke out. During the call his mother urged Lamar to pen his money to his pajamas for safekeeping. Tragically, that gesture would be the factor to quickly identifying his body.
Lamar was a member of the South Broad Baptist Church in Rome, Georgia. A memorial plaque honoring Lamar, Charles, Billy and Buzz was placed at the Rome, Georgia YMCA.
