Minnie was the daughter of William Finlayson and his wife Janette Mitchell. She was one of six children: Thomas; Maggie; Isabella; Janette; and Elizabeth. Minnie and Elizabeth (or Lizzie) were the youngest children and the only ones born in America; the rest of her family were all born in Scotland, having sailed to America in 1856. Her father and her grandfather, Thomas, were farmers in Bristol (Yorkville), IL. She married Edgar Gray and they had two daughters: Ethel May (1881) and Celia (1885). They lived for many years in Leaf River, Illinois where Edgar worked as a carpenter. Minnie and Edgar moved to sunny southern California in the 1920's and lived in a new tract of homes in Lynwood, CA (3336 Josephine Street). In time, many family members would join them in California, including her daughters and their husbands, and her widowed sister Lizzie and her children and grandchildren. In 1930, her daughter Ethel and her son-in-law Howard were living with them in Lynwood. There were many family gatherings, picnics and trips around southern California in their "touring" car.
