Darrell Bayes was born to Hollis and Iva Bayes in 1926. He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1944, and became a member of the 30th Replacement Draft. He was assigned to B/1/24 on February 24, 1945, and served in the battle of Iwo Jima.
Bayes survived the war unwounded, and returned to Ohio. He settled in Defiance, married Eleanor Knox, and raised a family. Bayes ran his own auto repair shop, and taught at a local vocational school for several years.
