Laura Evans was a legendary madam in Leadville and Salida. Starting her career as a prostitute in Denver, she headed to Leadville during the 1890s silver boom. She was a colorful character in these mining towns, once being arrested for horse racing, and another time hiding a large amount of money to deliver to mine owners during a mining strike. She established a new parlor house in Salida in the late 1890s and lived and worked there until the 1950s.
