Lt. Herbert J. Jones' marker is located at: N 36° 17.221 & W 088° 42.629. Lt. Jones served with the Battery D of the 6th Field Artillery with the 1st Division during World War I. He was killed in action on July 4, 1918. Lt. Jones' body remained in France till early 1921 when he was re-entered at Sunset Cemetery. His family erected a stone for their loved one at the Sunset Cemetery in Dresden, TN. Lt. Jones was awarded the Distinquished Service Cross and Croix De Guerre. Herbert J. Jones is a Honor Roll Soldier. His name is listed on the Weakley County War Memorial at Dresden, Weakley, Tn.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Herbert J. Jones, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 6th Field Artillery, 1st Division, A.E.F., near Coullemelle, France, 4 July 1918. During a heavy enemy bombardment, Lieutenant Jones exposed himself fearlessly to go to the assistance of a wounded soldier, being killed by shell fire while engaged in this heroic action.
