Maree Herring Harris, 87, of Charlottesville died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at her home. Born October 29, 1919, in Albemarle County, she was the daughter of the late John Abbott and Laura Elma Marshall Purvis, and was the wife of the late Charles Foster Harris. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ashton John Herring, Percy Carrington Herring and Clarence Wilington Herring and a half-sister, Mattie Lee Groneman. Mrs. Harris was a member of Southside Christian Church. Over the course of 35 years, she touched the lives of countless young women as a tireless Girl Scout troop and day camp leader, earning her the affectionate nickname of "Grandma Nature". She is survived by three daughters, Barbara LaRue Snead, Sharon H. Siler and Annie H. Crickenberger; seven grandchildren, Gracie Robertson, Rosa Burnette, Etta Dunbar, Sharolyn Hockey, Laurie Smith, Eva Shannon and Rachel Dunn; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A graveside service will be conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at Holly Memorial Gardens, with Mr. David Vaughan and Mr. Joe Brummett officiating.
