Joseph was the oldest son of Enoch and Amy Turner Keithley. Following the death of his father in the Civil War, the family moved to Fairview, Illinois where he farmed. He and his first wife, Martha Ann Conn, had four children: Violet Belle, Eva, Leo Henry and Mabel Amy. We have found no information on the death or burial location of Martha Ann. The family moved from Illinois to Carterville, Missouri where Joseph was a grocer. Joseph's second wife was Sarah Oliver and they had two children, Arthur Enoch and Susannah. At the time of his death, Joseph owned a grocery in Joplin and was President of the Merchant's Association. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.

There is a FindAGrave memorial for Joseph and Sarah's son, Arthur Enoch, but it is managed by someone who is inactive; since I am unable to get Arthur linked to his parents, I am providing a link to his memorial page here: Arthur E Keithley
