Benjamin enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 13 August 1861 at Camp Moore. He was mustered as a 4th Corporal in Company A, 12th Louisiana Infantry. He was captured in Nashville, Tennessee on 16 December 1864 with a gun shot wound of his left lung. He died of his wound in Cumberland General Hospital (Union Army) in Nashville on 3 January 1865. He was originally buried at the Nashville City Cemetery in grave #10913 but was exhumed after the war and reinterred at Mount Olivet Confederate section. His burial record showed he was single, a resident of Pleasantville, Louisiana, 25 years old at the time of his death, born Alabama, he had no effects, and his relative: W. B. Atkins, father, of Pleasantville, Desoto Parish, Louisiana.
