Upon arriving in Vietnam, Norman was assigned to the 119th Assault Helicopter Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion, US Army Support Command Vietnam, MACV.
The Viet Cong launched a sapper attack while Camp Holloway was under hostile mortar fire.
Norman died as a result of fragmentation wounds to the body from the hostile mortar fire, 2 kilometers east southeast of Pleiku City, Pleiku Province.
