A native of Langenbrucken, Baden, Germany, John Ganninger was a Civil War Veteran. He enlisted on 23 Aug 1861 at St. Louis, Missouri and was mustered into Co. A, 17th Missouri Infantry on 07 Sep 1861, and mustered out on 15 Sep 1864.
He was married to Theresia (Bender) in Madison Co., Illinois on 25 May 1869. He died on June 1st at the age of seventy-six years, four months and twelve days; and despite not feeling well had taken an active part in the G.A.R.'s Memorial Day exercises.
