Creola, Velma Lea and Vernita, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Greene, were swept away in the disastrous flood of August 13, 1940. They were in the living room crying and praying when the house was overborne by the uncheckable torrent. Their brother Hooper, followed by his father, had just come in from the front porch and were standing near them when the first great crash hit the house. They were all standing side by side when the crash came and the house began to move rapidly away. Vernita, aged 12, was born February 22, 1928. She also was a victim of the flood of August 3. She was one of the sweetest little girls in our community and had many friends and playmates. Like her sisters, she had dark blue eyes and brown hair and was a beautiful girl. She also was a regular member of Sunday school and church services and, in common with her sisters, sang beautifully. She is missed in the junior choir and in her Sunday school class, as well as in the public school. She was kind to her parents and was especially devoted to her mother. She never failed to kiss her mother good night before she went to bed. Her little goodnight message to her mother was, "Good night, mama, sweet dream and I hope you sleep well." Her mother sorely misses that tender kiss and those comforting words she was accustomed to hear before Vernita went to bed each night. But that their parting will not be for always in a source of sweet consulation. The tragedy which overtook these three sweet little girls is a great loss to our community, but is Heaven's great gain. God knows best what it takes to build up His heavenly Kingdom. Little Vernita must have known that her end was near. She was lying on a small bed in the living room, where her parents, sisters and Hooper, her brother, had been praying. She was in deep sorrow and distress, crying aloud. Her mother, seeking to comfort her reached over and, patting her gently on the back said, "Hush, darling God will take care of us." Just at that moment they looked at the windowswhich were covered with the muddy flood waters, and soon they all went down together in the torrent. In spite of all their great sorrows and tribulations, there are consolations. The young sisters did not suffer on agony long. Death was mercifully quick. If we are prepared to meet Jesus when our life's span is ended, we will see the little Greene sisters again-- not in a home floods may destroy or flames devour, but in a home of never ending joy, a home of peace and happiness, a home where we will forever sing God's praises with them. The three sisters were buried in one large grave with their father. Many beautiful flowers covered their resting place.
The third girl in the family, Vernita, aged 12, was found August 15, two days after she had died in the flood. She was half buried in a rough drift near the one in which her sister Creola had lodged, within sight of Cook's home, and below the bridge over the creek that runs by the Cook place.
