The Ballantyne family had joined the Latter Day Saints in Scotland and came to the U.S. with other LDS followers on the ship Tyrian landing in New Orleans in 1841. They went up the Mississippi River to Nauvoo, IL where the colony settled and built a temple.
After Joseph Smith was murdered the Ballantynes spent one winter at LaCrosse, WI then went with the Lyman Wight Colony to Texas. In Texas they lived in several counties building grist and saw mills finally settling at Medina, Texas.
Andrew married Rebecca Jane Connyers March 6, 1853 in Burnett County, Texas. In 1855 they moved to Harrison County, Iowa and bought land a short distance south of Little Sioux. They farmed there until April 1875 when they moved to Monona County.
Andrew and Rebecca had a large family. Names of the known children can be found in Andrew's biography in the "History of Monona County, Iowa, 1890."
Andrew died April 15, 1897 and is buried at the Spring Valley Cemetery in Moorhead, Iowa.
Information on his birth was obtained from birth records, Selkirk Parish, Selkirkshire, Scotland LDS film #102277, page 196. Other information was obtained from his biography in the "History of Monona County, IA 1890" by the National Publishing Company. His brother, James, was on the committee doing the book. His marriage is recorded in Burnet County, Texas.
