Roy Francis Barteau died on Monday, March 6, 1944, in a plane crash, over the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of Jacksonville, FL. The following, was copied from a newspaper article:, SGT. BARTEAU, AERIAL GUNNER, WAS ABOARD MISSING BOMBER, SGT. Roy F. Barteau, an aerial gunner, was aboard a heavy bomber that is missing today from its base, Chatham Field, near Savannah, Ga., the War Department informed his father, Mathew Barteau, 305 Castello, Street, Florissant., The bomber, which carried a crew of 10 officers and men and two flying, instructors, was last seen yesterday when it dropped out of a, formation of three planes flying over the ocean southeast of Jacksonville, Florida., Residents of Daytona Beach, Florida, reported that a large plane, possibly an Army bomber, exploded yesterday some 30 miles off St. Augustine, Florida and one body was brought ashore at Daytona, the Associated Press said., SGT. Barteau, 20 years old, worked for the McDonnell Aircraft, Corporation before entering the service.
