Fred Harney Passes Away.
Fred F. Harney, Sr., one of Hobart's old and honored residents, passed away at his home on Monday of this week, aged 65 years.
The funeral under the auspices of Court Hobart, I.O.F. of A., will be conducted today (Friday), 1 o'clock at the house and 2 o'clock at the M.E. church. The burial will be at the Hobart cemetery.

Carl Friedrich August Harney was born in Hindenburg, Germany, Nov. 29, 1845, and died after a brief illness at his home near Hobart on April 10, 1911, aged 65 years, 4 months and 12 days.
He learned the trade of blacksmithing but his country needing his services he entered the regular army in 1866 and served through the German-Austrian war, being discharged in 1868 with a perfect record according to the discharge. He also saw service in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870-1, being in nine engagements.
He came to America and landed in Chicago in 1872 and opened a blacksmith shop but the next year he came to Hobart and for three years worked for the late Wm. Scholler. On Jan 15, 1876, he was united in marriage in Chicago to Mrs. Margaret Stienmetz who was born in Ager, Austria, and by a previous marriage had two children -- Frank and Mary. She died in Hobart, Jan. 1, 1894. To Mr. and Mrs. Harney were born three sons -- Edward, Fred F. and William.
In November, 1901, he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie Hough who was born March 1, 1857, at North Augusta, Canada, and died Sept. 18, 1906.
After Mr. Harney's first marriage he purchased a few acres just southwest of town and built a blacksmith shop and there pursued his chosen profession through the remainder of his life. As an artisan he was well skilled and as a citizen highly respected and honored by all who knew him. He always lived a simple life and was very industrious.
When Court Hobart, I.O.F. of A., was organized Oct. 6, 1887, Mr. Harney became a charter member and served as its first chaplain. Under the auspices of Court Hobart, the funeral was held at 2 o'clock at the M.E. Church on Friday, April 14, the Rev. Servies officiating. The interment was in Hobart cemetery.
The deceased is survived by three sons -- Fred F. of Hobart and Edward and William who live in the state of Washington, and two stepchildren -- Frank Steinmetz who lives in Kansas City, and Mrs. Marie Hemstreet who resides in Chicago; also by nine grandchildren.
