James William (Jim) Ballinger was the son of James Hamilton and Eady Caroline Willis Ballenger. His father died in Tennessee in 1863 during the Civil War and he and his brother David Jasper were raised in a family of widow women and their children. He married Sallie Trophenia Bobo Ballinger. They had seven children: Ada Victoria (Tory), Mary Elizabeth (Betty), Lucy Ann, Eadie Caroline, Connie Bell, Sarah Catherine (Carrie) and James Hamilton.
