Texas Governor. Served as Governor of Texas from 1907 to 1911. He became General Manager of the Great Northern Railroad and moved family to their Palestine, Texas mansion (1892 to 1897). First ran for Governor in 1902 but lost the primary to S.W.T. Lanham. Using the campaign song "The Campbell's Are Coming", he was elected Governor in 1907 and reelected in 1909. He ran for United States Senate in 1912 but was defeated by former Governor Charles Allen Culberson. In 1914 he joined the Prohibitionists to try and stop the election of James E. "Pa" Ferguson. The town of Campbell, Hunt County, Texas was named for him after he was instrumental in building the East Line and Red River Railroad in the area with this community as its headquarters. He died at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas in 1923.
