Obituary from the "Evening Times-Republican" of Marshalltown, Iowa dated 1 Mar 1918:
Two Pioneer Residents Dead.

George A. Pettis and Mrs. Caldwell Die
in Franklin County.
Hampton, March 1. - Death has two more of this county's pioneers during the past few days. First was George A. Pettis, who passed away at the age of 79 years. From New York, where he was born, he came with his parents to Ohio, thence to Fulton, Ill., where in 1860 he enlisted in the Forty-eighth Illinois infantry. On March 20, 1864, he was united in marriage to Louisa C. Wright. Since 1867 the couple have resided in Franklin county. To them were born six girls and three boys. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. C. H. Nichol and interment was in the Old Chapin Cemetery.

He married Louisa Cornelia Wright 20 March 1864 in Fountain Prairie, Columbia, Wisconsin.
