Harvey Charles Carothers Sr.

Funeral services for Harvey Charles Carothers Sr., 90, will be held at 1 p.m. today, at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 1216 5th Ave., Moline.

Born Nov. 24, 1907, in Felton, Minn., he died Friday, July 10, 1998, at River Park Nursing Home, Rock Island. Interment will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery.

At age 18, Harvey started a six year career as a welter weight boxer. A Navy veteran, he married Hertha K. `Hettie' Schild in Clinton, Iowa, on June 29, 1929.

In 1936, he was appointed as a member of the Moline Fire Department and advanced his ranks from Lieutenant to Captain and then to Assistant Fire Chief. He was made Chief of the Fire Prevention Bureau, before leaving the Moline Fire Department to accept the position in 1958, as the first paid Fire Chief of Arlington Heights, heading a six paid, 23 volunteer fire department.

He taught a fire prevention class at the University of Illinois for three years and was also president of the Illinois Fire Chief's Association. Before retiring at age 65, Chief Carothers headed a team of 65 firefighters.
His retirement years were enjoyed traveling with his wife, Hettie.

Survivors include his children, Donald (Janet) Carothers of Moline and Linda (Jim) Houdek of Palatine; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Lucille Wilson of Moline.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hettie on Feb. 28, 1998; son, Harvey Jr. on Feb. 16, 1987; and brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be from noon until the time of services today, at the funeral home.

Today he again is united with the one he laughed with loved, his wife, Hettie.
