On January 22, 1847 he married Amelia Sheldon of Watertown, Jefferson County, New York. They had eight children, 4 boys and 4 girls.
In 1864 the family moved to Percival, Fremont County, Iowa, where he owned a farm. He was very involved with the educational institutions in Fremont County and held the position of School Director for twelve years. He also held the position of Justice of the Peace for at least five years (1877-1881).
He was a member of the Sons of Temperence, and the Masonic fraternity.
