Alma Maude Taylor Benedict, 98, of Fort Scott, Kan., died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2009, at the Fort Scott Manor Nursing Home. Alma Benedict was born March 30, 1910 in Crawford County, Kan.
She was the third daughter of Jess Newton and Emma Schneider Taylor. In 1911 the Taylor family moved to a farm 12 miles northeast of Fort Scott, Kan., in Bourbon County. Alma graduated from Fort Scott High School in 1928. In 1932 she graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, Kan., with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics. In 1933, after graduating from the Dietary Department of the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, she was hired for the position of Ward Dietician at the Graduate Hospital of Pennsylvania where she worked for 3 years. In 1936 Alma accepted a position as Commissary Manager for Seven B/G Inns in Pittsburgh, PA. She held this position until 1939 when she transferred to the B/G Home Office in Chicago, IL. She held this position until 1942.
On April 26, 1941 Alma married Henry Lucian Benedict in Chicago, IL. In 1943 Henry was inducted into the U.S Navy. He was sent oversees with the Fifth Navel Construction Br. (SeaBees) to Hawaii and then to the Philippines. He was discharged Dec. 2, 1945. Henry preceded Alma in death on July 25, 1986. After the war, Alma and Henry settled in Chicago, IL. She continued her career in dietary services until 1953, when they relocated to Fulton, Kan., in order to be close to Alma's parents who were in poor health.
In 1956 Alma became a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Later, she became the Service Chairman for the Bourbon County Cancer Unit where she was instrumental in establishing a Cancer Dressing and Work Center in Fort Scott. In 1959 Alma became a Kansas Division Board Member serving as Kansas Division Service Chairman from 1960-62 and as Kansas Division Service Vice-Chairman from 1962-63.
In 1963 Alma was hired as a Field Representative of the American Cancer society for 18 counties in Eastern Kansas where she was responsible for developing educational programs, fund raising, and for giving services to people. She held this job until 1975 when she retired.
After Alma's parents died, Alma and Henry moved to the Taylor Family farm. While living there she was a member of the Extension Homemakers Unit (EHU). She was also a member of the Greater Kansas Weavers Guild and of the West Liberty United Methodist Church which she first joined in 1921. Alma moved from the Taylor Family farm to the Fort Scott Presbyterian Village in 1994.
Until recent years she was able to keep busy with her hobbies which included weaving wool rugs, for which she received numerous awards, and doing research for the Joseph Best Taylor Family History. In December of 2008 Alma moved to the Fort Scott Manor.
Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Emma Taylor; two sisters, Gladys G. (Taylor) Taylor and Callie L (Taylor) Prell, two nieces, Catherine Taylor and Marilyn (Taylor) Saunders, and one nephew, George Prell. She is survived by two nephews, Vern Taylor of California and Edward Prell of Hot Springs, Ark., as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
Rev. Vida Williams will conduct funeral services 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Jan. 24, 2009 at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, with internment at the West Liberty Cemetery. Following the burial services, lunch will be provided for family and friends at the West Liberty Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Friday evening, Jan. 23, 2009, from 7-8 p.m. at the Konantz-Cheney Funeral Home, 15 W. Wall Street, P.O. Box 309, Fort Scott, Kansas, 66701.
