IS CRUSHED TO DEATH

Herington Man Killed in Accident to Rock Island Roundhouse

William Richard Atkinson, 53, Herington, received fatal injuries and a working companion, Horace Blankenship, 2310 North Waco avenue, was seriously injured when a derrick shovel slipped a chain and fell on them with a huge load of earth. The accident occurred shortly before noon yesterday at the Rock Island roundhouse, Twenty-flfth street and Mead avenue.

Atkinson, a pipe fitter who came here a week ago to work on a well job for the Rock Island, was working with Blankenship on the braces for the dome-like covering of the well just south of the roundhouse when the shovel fell. The two men were several feet apart. Atkinson was literally crushed against one of the braces. Blankenship received a slanting blow which broke several of his ribs and probably caused internal injuries. A fellow workman saved him from falling into the well.

Atkinson died in a Lahey and Martin ambulance on the way to the hospital. Last night attaches at St. Francis hospital said Blankenship's condition is regarded as very serious. His recovery is a matter of doubt.

Atkinson was a native Kansan. He was born in Butler county on August 20, 1878. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge. He is survived his wife, Clemmie; six children, Richard, Seward and Raymond of Herington, Mrs. B. F. Munkers, Wichita, Mrs. Allan Merrill, Furley, and Mrs. Thelma Wills, Tucumcari, N. M.; two brothers, Alfred of Longton and John of Independence; and three sisters, Mrs. Ada Copeland, Shidler, Okla., and Mrs. Earl Wills and Mrs. F. E. Hums, both of Independence.

Lahey and Martin mortuary is in charge.
