Alford stood as a conscientious objector (CO) in WWII, and was imprisoned until the end of the war. Although his family remained in east Texas, he became a rolling stone. He married Beverly Hope Luce October 31, 1948 in Syracuse, NY. They lived in Texas, Arizona, and California, and served as missionaries for the Jehovah's Witness religion in east Kentucky until their only child was born in 1961 in southern Ohio. They divorced in 1969 in Florida; Alford married Juanita Beckwith in 1971 in Jacksonville, FL. They were divorced in 2000.
