The son of Adam and Catherine Elizabeth (Brandenstien), he was a Musician with Co.'s I & L 4th Missouri Infantry. he enlisted on 09 May 1861 at St. Louis Arsenal, and was mustered out there on 01 Aug 1861.

He married Anna Brede (also of Hesse) on 02 Aug 1863, and according to the 1870-1880 census records, they were the parents of Conrad, born in 1864; Elizabeth, born 1866; Henry, born 1868; Emma, born 1870; Martin, born 1873; and John, born 1875. The family resided in Collinsville where Nicholas was a farmer.
