Heye was the son of German immigrants Lubben Ulfert Albers and Ehe Mennen. Identified siblings were Ulfert Lubbe, Cornelia Marie, Menhard Lubbe, Jurgen Lubbe, Anna Dorthea, Flora Emilia, and Lubbe Gerhard. Paternal grandparents were Ulfert Luppen Albers and Ehmen Antje Jurgen. Maternal grandparents were Johann Luiken Mennen and Ikke Frieden Trauernicht.
On 2 May 1898, Santa Fe, New Mexico; Heye L. Albers enlisted as a Private with Troop F of the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry (The Rough Riders). On 6 May 1898, he mustered for service in Santa Fe. He was described as age 25 years and 6 months (B: ~ Nov 1872), native of Hancock County, Illinois; 5 feet-7 inches, fair complexion, blue eyes, flaxen hair and a barber. On 17 May 1898, at a camp near San Antonio, Texas; Heye mustered again with the same description. On 24 June 1898, during the attack on San Guasimas, Cuba; Heye was wounded in action and hospitalized. In July, he was on furlough and was paid at Fort Thomas, Kentucky. On 15 Sep 1898, Camp Wikoff, Long Island, New York; Heye's company was mustered out of service. Heye mustered out of service on 7 Oct 1898 at Fort Logan, Colorado.(from his service documents).
