He enlisted as Private in the 17th Connecticut Regiment in April 1777. The regiment was under the overall command of Colonel Jonathan Meigs. He served in several different companies in the 17th until the unit was disbanded after eight months In 1799 he served as a waiter to his uncle, Major Augustus Collins in the Connecticut Militia under the command of General Andrew Ward. He was discharged after two months service.
The Collins family moved to the area later to be known as Collinsville in the 1820's. The Collins family made a request to the Postmaster General to name the new village Unionville. The request was turned down due to the fact a Unionville Illinois was already in existence. The Postmaster made the suggestion of Collinsville since the request was made by the Collins family.

Inscription
In the cemetery, a beautiful plat of ground in the southern limits of the village, there stands a conspicuous white marble monument. Eight feet from the ground on each of its four faces the name Collins is engraved. A short distance below on the west side are the following inscriptions:
WILLIAM COLLINS Died April 19th, 1849,— Aged 88 years.
ESTHER, His wife, died January 8, 1834,— aged 70 years.
On the south side, MARIA COLLINS Died December, 1822,— aged 22 years.
On the east side, AUGUSTUS COLLINS Died February 15, 1828,— aged 35 years,
ANSON COLLINS Died May 15th, 1835,— aged 40 years.
A short distance from the main monument there is a plain marble slab inscribed:
SACRED
To the memory of WILLIAM B. COLLINS,
Son of Deacon William and Esther Collins
who died July 22d, 1835, aged 35 years.
