He was the son of James E. Van Vleet and Frieda Thurn Van Vleet.
He was married to Jerri Carroll.
They were the parents of two children.

He was a 1974 graduate of the United States Military Academy. During his active duty career he served in Germany, Korea and Somolia, and numerous other postings in the United States before he retired in 1996 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked ten years as Regional Director of a telecom firm before retiring to Florida.
Interment followed Mass of Christian Burial offered at the Most Holy Trinity Catholic chapel, West Point, New York, December 29, 2009.
