Hazel Abernathy, the daughter of Henry and Joanna (Laird) Skidmore, was born April 10, 1912 at South Sioux City, Nebraska. She departed this life on Sunday, November 11, 2001 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud, Nebraska at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 1 day.

Hazel graduated from the South Sioux City High School in 1929, with a certificate in normal training. She taught rural schools for a period of time. In 1932, she was married to William Rosewaren. They made their home at South Sioux City, and the marriage later ended in divorce. In June of 1948, Hazel married Authur (sic) Heise. They continued to live in South Sioux City, where he preceded her in death.

On October 22, 1957, Hazel was united in marriage with Donald D. Abernathy at Laverne, Minnesota. They traveled for a period of time, and in 1959, Don and Hazel moved to Guide Rock where they owned and operated Abernathy Greyhound Kennels. Don passed away on June 22, 1987.

Hazel was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Royal Neighbors, the Rebekah Lodge, Handy Homemakers, and the Card Club. Hazel was happiest when she was helping Don with the kennels and raising the dogs. She especially enjoyed the race track and the anticipation of the dogs successes. In her leisure time she always looked forward to playing cards with her family and friends.

Also preceding her in death were her parents; her son, William Rosewaren, Jr. in 1995; grandson, Brian Jennings; three sisters: Mildred Skidmore, Edith Lamsden and Lila Walter; and a brother, Allen Skidmore.

Left to cherish her memory are her step-daughter, Pat Jennings of Guide Rock, Nebraska; step-sons: Don Abernathy of Lander, Wyoming, and Jim Abernathy of Sarasota, Florida; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; other relatives and a host of friends.
