S. M. WANAMAKER'S DEATH WAS SUDDEN
Samuel M. Wanamaker, one of the oldest and best known clothiers in the city, died at his home, 1926 Spring Garden street, at half-past one o'clock yesterday morning. Death was due to a breakdown of his nervous system caused by the performance of a delicate operation necessitated by a trolley accident. He was 56 years old.
In the death of Mr. Wanamaker the clothing business of this city loses one of three Wanamaker brothers who have done so much for the commercial advance of the city. Unlike his brothers, he did not branch out into any other businessor engage in public life or church work. What ever time he could spare from his business he gave to his family.
After graduating from the public schools in the city he went to work in a store. At an early age he engaged with his brother John Wanamaker in the clothing business and they established a store at 818 Chestnut street. Later John moved to the Grand Depot at Thirteenth and Chestnut streets and Samuel maintained the Chestnut street store under the name of S. M. Wanamaker & Co. After being in business at this address for many years he took charge of the store Wanamaker & Brown at Ninth and Chestnut streets and was manager there until recently when he branched out for himself at 1019 Chestnut street.
In 1866 he married Miss Catherine Leech of this city, and she and his four sons, Nelson, Horace, John and Sergeant, survive him. Three of these sons were engaged in the clothing business with him.
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the services being private. Interment will be made in Westminster Cemetery. Rev. James Crawford, Pastor of Christ Reformed Church, Sixteenth and Green streets, which Mr. Wanamaker was a member, will conduct the services.

The funeral of Samuel M. Wanamaker was held yesterday from his late residence, 1926 Spring Garden street, and was largely attended by merchants of prominence, including many from other cities. The services were conducted by Rev. James Crawford, Pastor of Christ Reformed Church, Sixteenth and Green streets. The pallbearers were Charles F. Warwick, Thomas W. Murray, P. F. Rothermel, A. Montant, Howard S. Jones, Robert M. Coyle, L. L. Register and Barton F. Blake. Interment which was private, was in Westminster Cemetery.
