SCRANTON- Bennie Dean Best Sr., 63, Scranton, died Monday, Oct. 6, 1997, at home. He was born June 13, 1934, in Topeka, the son of Bennie Taylor and Virginia Louise Anderson Best. His father died in 1935 and he was raised by his stepfather and mother, Raymond H. “Bud” and Virginia Weeks. He was graduated from Topeka High School in 1952. He was an electronics technician for the U.S. Post Office in Topeka before he retired in 1988. He served in the Air Force 20 years and was a master sergeant before he retired from the military service. He lived in Topeka and Oskaloosa before he returned to Scranton in 1989. He was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Scranton. He was married to Shirley J. Angel Feb. 26, 1953, in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Bennie D. Best Jr., Topeka; four daughters, Bobi Morris and Beverly Benaka, both of Scranton, Brenda Wilson, McLouth, and Barbara Best, Carbondale; a sister, Virginia Engroff, Topeka; 13 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Scranton. Military graveside services will follow at Scranton Cemetery. Mr. Best will lie in state after 1 p.m. today at Parker-Price Mortuary in Topeka where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Evangelical Covenant Church, PO Box 129, Scranton, 66537.
