Just think of stepping on shore and finding it Heaven, of touching a hand and finding its God's. Ken fought a courageous battle with cancer and is now in the presence of His Lord in his new restored body. Kenneth died Thursday evening, July 31, 2003 at his residence. He was born May 11, 1935 in Elmira, Michigan, a son of Paul and Rose (Sladek) Akins. Years ago he served with the U.S. Army and the National Guard. He had been a Kalamazoo area resident for 45 years, and was employed with the IBM Corporation for 20 years before retiring. He later worked at Ace Hardware and Koolant Koolers. He was a member of Calvary Bible Church and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. He was also a member of the International Ford Retractable Club. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Eugene. On May 18, 1957, he was united in marriage to Joanne "Joni" M. (McCaffrey) Akins, who survives. Also surviving are 3 daughters, Julie (Gary) Crawford of VanWert, OH, and Susan (Robert) Stewart and Stephanie Akins, all of Kalamazoo; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Rosalyn (William) Meyers of Kalamazoo, and Paula (Vernon) Thompson of Grand Ledge, MI; an aunt; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be held 1 o'clock Monday at the Calvary Bible Church, 855 S. Drake Rd. with the Rev. Dr. John Munro officiating. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. Interment will be in East Cooper Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Bible Church or Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
