Syver Haugtvedt was born on November 27, 1864 at Haugtvedthagen farm, near Gran, Norway. His parents were Erick Hanson and Kjersti Larsdtr Haugtvedt. On April 27, 1871 Syver, his parents, and siblings boarded the sailing ship "Anna Delius" bound for Quebec, arriving on June 6, 1871. They first settled near Elstad, in rural Fillmore Co., MN. By 1880, the family had moved to Tansem Township, near Norwegian Grove, MN where many close relatives were living.

Syver married Gina Pederson on April 11, 1890 at the North Immanuel Lutheran Church in Norwegian Grove, MN. They lived at Tansem until 1898 when they moved to Deer Township, near Greenbush,to homestead. They lived there until about 1950 when they moved into town.

Syver was a kind and loving father, highly respected by family and friends. He took an active interest in church and public work. He held various positions in Deer Township and school district for many years and served his community faithfully. Mr. Haugtvedt was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Congregation.

Syver E. Haugtvedt passed away at the Greenbush Community Hospital at six o'clock Sunday evening, July 19, 1953 from a lingering illness. Mr. Haugtvedt was 88 years, 7 months and 23 days of age at the time of death. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Gina, two sons, nine daughters; 26 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. Four sons preceded him in death. Funeral services were at the Bethlehem Church, and interment was at the East Bethlehem Cemetery. All the children were present at the funeral. The entire community joins extending condolences to the family as another pioneer leaves our midst.
