George "Damon" Alexander
SAN ANGELO - On Sunday morning, Sept. 5, 2004, Damon joined his heavenly father after a long illness.
On Oct. 21, 1911, George "Damon" Alexander was the first child born to James Franklin and Nora Short Alexander near Calf Creek, Texas, in McCullough County, about 16 miles southwest of Brady, Texas. Damon attended school for a short while in Gorman, Texas, as his father had to go to work in the oil fields after the terrible drought that caused stock-farming to be unprofitable. His mother, who was a teacher, did home schooling. When they returned to their home, Damon completed school at Calf Creek. When Damon was a young single man, he was a "jack-of-all-trades", mainly working on ranches and truck driving.
On Nov. 19, 1938, Damon married the love of his life, Pauline Cavin, at the First Baptist Church in Eden, Texas, by the Rev. W. L. Wall. The Rev. Wall, a Methodist minister, performed their ceremony for Pauline's parents, Paul and Sudie McLean Cavin.
Damon and Pauline have lived in several places. They lived near Brady, Texas, on a farm in Brady, on a ranch near London, Texas, and returned to Brady to work on the maintenance crew at Curtis Field where pilots of the U.S. Air Force trained for World War II. Then they moved to San Angelo, Texas, where Damon worked at the Chevrolet dealership as a mechanic. In the fall of 1945, he got a job at Glasscock Chevrolet in Big Lake, Texas. After many years at Glasscock Chevrolet, Damon went into business for himself. In 1966-1967, Damon began his teaching career at Pearsall High School, teaching juniors and seniors automotive technology. In 1967, Damon began the same program at McCamey High School and commuted daily for 15 years from their home in Big Lake, Texas.
Damon Alexander was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church. He worked in various church programs. In 1952, Damon was ordained as deacon and remained active until placed on the inactive list in the 1980s. Damon and Pauline were active supporters of all sports in their school systems as well as going to see other sports of their interest. They also were avid travelers and together visited all 50 states plus several places in Canada, Mexico and Jamaica.
In 1990, Damon and Pauline sold their home in Big Lake, Texas, and built a new home in the Rio Concho West Retirement Center in San Angelo, Texas. During retirement they stayed very active in many of the activities provided for them in the center, church and community. They have been supportive and faithful members of the Southland Baptist Church and the Friendship Class since living in San Angelo, Texas.
Damon is preceded in death by his parents, James and Nora Alexander; three brothers, Harvey C., Emery L. and James F. Alexander; two sisters, Alma Kolb and Winnie Dye; and a nephew, Ken Barker.
Damon is survived by his wife of 65 years, Pauline C. Alexander; and a sister, Wilma Barker of San Antonio, Texas. Damon has two sister-in-laws Millicent Alexander and Bessie Lee Cavin; three nephews James Kold and wife Angel, Donnie Barker and Steve Barker; and a niece, Loraine Wigley and her husband, Del. Damon also has two great-nephews Clifton and Preston; and a great-niece, Angela. Several great-great-nephews and nieces also survive him. Damon was also fond of his wife's nephew, Lane Cavin and wife Cyndi; nieces Vicki Leach and husband Ron, and Cheryl Cunningham and husband Bill; and his great-nephews, Jon and Rick Leach; and great-nieces, Angela and Ashlee Cunningham.
Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the chapel of Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas. Burial will follow at 3 p.m. in the Eden City Cemetery in Eden, Texas. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas.
The honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Friendship Class of Southland Baptist Church. The active pallbearers are J. D. Barron, John Bilberry, John Bowman, Mike Carraway, Gene Cook, Aubrey Edwards, John Owens, Bill Roberts, Gene Rowden, Marvin Tennyson and George Tucker.
