Geneva attended Schulenberg High School. She followed in the family tradition and played violin in the high school orchestra. Geneva graduated from high school in 1941. She then went to Texas Teachers College in San Marcos, Texas where she met her future husband.
On November 1, 1941 in San Marcos, Texas, Geneva married Granville William Cowan. Granville was lost at sea while serving in the United States Navy during World War II. Geneva then moved to Houston and worked for The Texas Company (now Texaco, Inc.) where she worked in electronic data processing.
Geneva and Granville had one son: Phil Ray.
