James Verlin Brennan, son of James A. and Emma Murphy Brennan, aged 18 years and one week, died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Keokuk, Ia., Jan. 20, as the result of an accident which occurred on Jan. 5, while he and Lowell Brennan were driving to school at St. Patrick. As they were almost to the school, their horse became frightened, ran away, and threw both from the buggy, fracturing Verlin's skull. He improved quite satisfactorily for about five days, when he suffered a relapse and was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where the X-ray showed the fracture. No hope was given by specialists. After intense suffering, he passed away on Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 20. Funeral services were held from the Catholic church at St. Patrick, Thursday, Jan. 22, at 10 o'clock, Rev. Fathers Dempsey and Gannon officiating. The pallbearers were six of his chums and the honorary pallbearers were the Senior class of 1931 of St. Patrick High School, of which he was a member, always faithful to his work and an honor to his school. He is survived by his father, James Brennan, two brothers, Ervin and Thomas, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Logsdon. His mother, one sister, and one brother preceded him to the grave. In his passing, the family loses a loving son and brother, his church a faithful member and his class and teachers a kind and obedient companion. Only those who were privileged to know and associate with him can fully know and appreciate the kind, cheerful disposition he possessed, always a pleasure to his family and companions.
