The Spanish-American War started in April 1898, and near the end of that month Sedalia's men began preparing for battle. Sedalia Mayor W. C. Overstreet offered soldiers use of the city park for camping and drilling; Sedalia citizens stepped up to support them. The war ended 113 days after it began. Sedalia's troops never left the United States and were mustered out on in late February and early March 1899.
