Margaret "Peggy" Kitchens Thornton was the daughter of Thomas Thornton III and Nancy Kitchens. She was born in Virginia, but the Thornton family was living in Washington County, Kentucky by the time Peggy was age 5 in 1810. Peggy married George Helm Coppedge at age 20, in Washington County, Kentucky in 1825. The Coppedge clan moved from Kentucky into Missouri circa 1830-1840, and settled farms first in Crawford County which later became Maries County. The Coppedge family is closely associated with the Harrison family of Crawford, Maries, and Phelps Counties, Missouri. George Helm Coppedge and Peggy Thornton Coppedge were the parents of at least 7 children, one of whom was Mary Jane Coppedge who married John Milton Harrison of Maries and Phelps County, Missouri.
