1912. Barry was assigned to command the Eastern Division of the US Army for the next two years. In 1914 he was sent to the Philippines and China as commander of all the American troops. He was retired on October 13, 1919. General Barry had been ill for three weeks and died of uremic poisoning as the result of Bright's disease at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on December 30, 1919.
