Howard, who resided in Laurel, Delaware, served as a Private with Company L, 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on March 19, 1942 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. He was noted as Single, without dependents. He therefore married after enlistment.

He was "Killed In Action" on Leyte, Philippine Islands while trying to assist a comrade during the war.

He had served in the Army for two years and nine months at the time of his death and was decorated with a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
