Blanch Elizebeth Schmerbauch Nix, 84 of Winter Street in Claremont, NH, died Monday, June 14, 2010, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, following a period of failing health. She was born in Rombauer, MO, on May 8, 1926, a daughter of Charles and Julia (Sutton) Schmerbauch. She had been a Claremont resident since 1963 moving here from Cochituate, MA. She married Harding E. Nix on April 26, 1952, in Granite City, IL. Blanch graduated as class valedictorian from McCray-Dewey High School in Troy, IL, in 1944. She also received a diploma from Western Union in Crawfordsville, IN, and then was employed as a Western Union Operator in Granite City. She hated getting "killed in action" telegrams and seeing families waiting to hear. After going to Comptometer School in St. Louis, Blanch became employed by General Steel in Granite City in 1951 and Raytheon in Waltham, MA, and then she stayed home with her three children. She and her husband owned and operated Nix's Store on Cornish Road in Claremont, NH, for many years. She enjoyed baking, sewing, (she made her daughter's clothes and wedding dress fitting them perfectly, Barbie and doll clothes, curtains, bookcovers, you name it!), crafts, yard sales, reading, jigsaw puzzles, hummingbirds and taking care of her family. She made the best frosting for birthday cakes!
Members of her family include her husband, Harding E. Nix; children Judith (Herbert) and Charles (Betty); three grandchildren, Lindsay, Laurel, and Christopher; several great grandchildren; five brothers, Roy, Erwin, Robert, John; three sisters, Viola, Dorothy, Ella, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and a son, James H. Nix in 2007; six brothers, Charles, Eugene, Arthur, Daniel, Joseph, Marcus, and a sister, Pauline Lewis.
