Benjamin served as a private in Carle's Troop of Light Horse, Hunterdon Militia, during the Revolutionary War. In 1795, he was keeping the Horse & Groom Tavern on what is now Broad Street in Hopewell Borough. He was a surveyor of Highways in 1797-8. He was co-executor of his brother Andrew in 1818. He was referred to as of Hopewell, 1814 & 1830.
