Emma (Kuether) Bertrand was born April 27, 1893 in St. Paul, Minnesota to John (Ferdinand) and Augusta (Struck) Kuether. She attended school in St. Paul through 4th grade. She worked as a young woman at a shoe factory lacing shoes. Many of her brothers and sisters died young during the TB epidemic and Emma took care of them.

She and Lloyd Bertrand were married in Minnesota in 1928 and they came to the Butte, Montana area in 1933. They were the parents of Lois, Don, Bobby, and Marlene.

Emma died September 17, 1983.
