Shortly after arriving in West Texas about 1870 from Mannheim, Germany, Edmund C. Jacoby enlisted in the 9th Cavalry and was stationed at Fort McKavett, about 20 miles southwest of here.

Jacoby learned how to survive on the frontier at an early age. He was a druggist by trade and assigned to the Post hospital. He also served as the paymaster.

....Jacoby soon got acquainted with Mina Schmitz, who was the secretary in the fort captain's office," said Peggy Smith, while tracing her family history. "They soon married and settled in the eastern part of Menard County about 1901, where they purchased 640 acres of land.
