NEW BERN, N.C. - Retired Sgt. Maj. James Conrad Thaanum, 74, of New Bern, formerly of Winthrop, Maine, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. He was born in Winthrop on Jan. 14, 1935, the son of the late Peter and Alma Thaanum.
Jim graduated from Winthrop High School in 1953 and then joined the Marine Corps, retiring in 1975. He dedicated much of his life to the Marine Corps and did three tours of duty in Vietnam.
Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Jim ran the Vandemere Ice Company in North Carolina. He also owned and operated his own landscape business for many years.
Jim also spent many years volunteering on the oncology unit at Craven Regional Medical Center, Carolina East Health System, in New Bern, logging in more than 6,000 hours in 2008.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Thaanum Mazzacane.
Jim was survived by his wife, Jackie. He will be sadly missed by his nieces, Carol Hamel, Nancy Eichinger, Lauri Ayers, Cynthia Depinto and Jodi Frei. He also leaves behind his stepgrandson, Corey Spence.
A committal service with military honors will be celebrated at the new Maine Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. (Kennebec Journal 6/26/2009)
